Don't Forget the Rooster! Understanding Rooster Diet Needs

When it comes to backyard chickens, most of the attention tends to go to the hens — and for good reason. They're busy laying eggs and have very specific nutritional needs. But what about the rooster? Many backyard chicken keepers unintentionally overlook the unique dietary requirements of roosters, often feeding them the same layer feed intended for hens.

While it might seem easier to feed everyone the same thing, layer feed is not suitable for roosters. In fact, it can cause long-term health issues due to its high calcium content.

Let’s take a closer look at why roosters need a different diet and what options are available to keep your entire flock healthy.

🐓 Why Layer Feed is a Problem for Roosters

Layer feed is specially formulated with high calcium levels (typically 3–4%) to support eggshell production. Hens actively use this calcium every day, but roosters don’t lay eggs — so that calcium has nowhere to go.

Over time, this excess calcium can cause kidney damage, urinary issues, and a shortened lifespan in roosters. Unfortunately, many flock owners don’t realize the harm until health problems arise.

✅ Better Options for Rooster Nutrition

Roosters need a balanced, lower-calcium feed that supports muscle, feather, and immune health — without overloading their kidneys. Here are two safe and effective feeding strategies:

Option 1: Feed Separately – Layer Feed for Hens, Finisher or All Flock for Roosters

If you have space or the ability to feed birds in separate areas, the best nutritional strategy is to:

  • Feed layer feed to your hens

  • Feed a finisher feed to your rooster(s)

This approach ensures every bird gets exactly what they need. Look for a finisher ration with:

  • 14–16% protein

  • Low calcium (around 1%)

  • Added vitamins & minerals for flock health

Bonus: This is also a great option if you have mixed flocks (hens, roosters, ducks, etc.).

Option 2: Feed All Finisher to Everyone + Provide Free-Choice Oyster Shell

If separating feed isn't possible, try this smart compromise:

  • Feed finisher or all flock ration to the whole flock (roosters and hens)

  • Offer oyster shell or calcium supplement separately, free-choice, in a small container

Hens will instinctively eat the oyster shell as needed, while roosters will leave it alone. This method keeps things simple while still protecting your rooster’s kidneys and giving your layers the calcium they require for strong eggshells.

Extra Tips from the Feed Bin

  • Keep feed fresh and store it in a dry, rodent-proof container.

  • Check body condition regularly — roosters need good muscle tone but not extra weight.

  • Eggshells cracking easily? Try adding oyster shell or reassessing your hens’ calcium intake.

  • High Calcium Treats like Black Solider Fly Larvae are a high calcium treat for the layers
